Agartala/Silchar, Nov. 16: The trickle of Reang families fleeing Mizoram has turned into an exodus overnight, with thousands of tribals pouring into Tripura and Assam seeking sanctuary.
Official sources in Agartala and Silchar said the number of Reang refugees who had entered Tripura and Assam over the past two days had now crossed the 5,000 mark. There were also signs of communal tension in the Mizo-dominated Jampui and Sakhantang hills of North Tripura, forcing the authorities to tighten security around all 10 Mizo-dominated villages.
The 35,000 Reang refugees stranded in the six camps close to Jampui hills in Kanchanpur subdivision organised rallies near their camps in Dashda, Naisingpara, Khakchang, Ananda Bazar, Monpui and Shashadhar Roajapara, condemning the “organised attacks” on their tribesmen in Lokicherra, Kwartha, Kawnpui and other areas of Mamit district.
In a rally this morning at Ananda Bazar, Elvis Chorkhy, president of the Mizoram Displaced Bru People’s Forum, charged the Lalthanhawla government with “aiding and abetting” the anti-Reang rioters to prevent the repatriation of refugees stranded in the six camps of North Tripura since October 15, 1997. They burnt an effigy of state home minister R. Lalzirliana to condemn his alleged role in the attacks.
The superintendent of police (North), Dipak Kumar, who is camping in Jampui hills, said security had been tightened in all Mizo-dominated villages. He said shortly after the killing of Zarjo Kima, an 18-year-old Mizo, in Bungthuam village on Friday, leaders of the Young Mizo Association (YMA) and Young Bru Association had held a meeting and decided to work together to maintain peace.
The YMA also distributed relief materials among the Reangs who have entered villages bordering Kanchanpur subdivision over the past couple of days.
“No untoward incident has occurred as the Reangs and Mizos have been living side by side in Jampui for more than a century. The trouble is likely to be caused by new entrants,” Kumar said.
The district magistrate (North), Samarjit Bhowmik, who visited the villages affected by influx this morning, said more than 5,000 Reangs had trickled into Vellian Chip, Monpui, Damcherra, Saboal, Ananda Bazar and Khakchang village. In Assam, 132 Reangs crossed the inter-state border and took shelter in Cheragi village under Karimganj district.

Houses burnt in Mizoram, Brus flee to Tripura
At least 1,500 Bru or Reang tribals fled to Tripura after agitated Mizo tribals set fire to their houses in Mamit district in Mizoram on Sunday following the killing of a villager.
Official in Aizawl said trouble broke out after miscreants, suspected to be members of a Bru militant group, shot Zarzokima, a 17-year old youth from Bungthuam village, when he had gone to a nearby forest to collect firewood on Friday. “A note left behind by the miscreants near the body mentioned they belonged to Bru Revolutionary Union (BRU). The note said BRU would not rest till their demands were met,” Mizoram DGP Lalrokhuma Pachuau told The Indian Express.
After the bullet-ridden body of the youth was found, villagers retaliated by attacking houses of Bru tribals in nearby areas.
“At least 350 houses have been burnt down in 10 villages since Saturday,” the DGP said.
Unofficial sources in Tripura claimed over 4,000 Bru or Reangs have fled from Mizoram and taken shelter in the Jampui Hills in the past two days.
The DGP, however, disagreed with these estimates. “The number will not be more than 1,500,” Pachuau said.
Over 30,000 Reang refugees have already fled to Tripura since trouble first broke out in Mizoram in 1997.

Mizoram CM denies he's victim of racism
The Mizoram government has issued a strongly worded denial which said the Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla was not correctly appreciated. What he had stated was that India is a multi-racial country and there could occasionally be some misunderstanding based on physical features of individuals from particular regions of the country. He did not even distantly suggest or hint that the people of India were racist and that he was a victim of racism, the Mizoram government said. Earlier the CM of Mizoram Lal Thanhawla, was qouted at a conference as passing racial remarks at India. The CM said, "In India, people ask me if I am an Indian. When I go South, people ask me such questions. They ask me if I am from Nepal or elsewhere. They forget that the Northeast is part of India. I have told many that see, I am an Indian like you. I am a victim of racism," said Lal Thanhawla. But his remarks hadn't gone down well with his Congress party. In fact the Congress has reacted strongly, saying it wants an explanation from the Chief Minister for his allegation that he's faced racism within India. Others present at the conference and who had heard the Mizoram chief minister speak said Lalthanhawla did not refer to racism at all, but took a light-hearted look at the distance between the northeast and the rest of India. |

Mizoram Culture
Mizoram, hooked into the southern part of the north eastern part of India is land of rolling hills, rivers and lakes. The state of Mizoram in India is close to both the Indo-Bangladesh border and the Indo-Myanmar border. The closeness to the numerous international borders has made Mizoram a blend of various tribes that migrated from China, Myanmar (the erstwhile Burma), and the other parts of the Northeast. Some Mizo tribes may have formed a part of the people who lived in the Tao valley in northwest China. They slowly proceeded towards the border of Tibet and Myanmar and around 1700 AD, these tribes shifted to what is known as Mizoram today.
The Influence of Christianity in Mizoram
The social and cultural life in the Mizo society has undergone enormous changes over the years. The Mizo people belong to a Mongoloid race associated to the Shaans of Myammar (Burma). The Lushai, Hmars, Paithes, Raltes, Pang, Mara, Lakher, Kukis and Pawis of Mizoram are the tribes who were originnally the believers of the Pathan (good spirit). With the immigration of the British and consequently the settling of the Christian missionaries in the region, most people got converted to Christianity. Thus, due to the influence of the British in this region, most of the population speak in English besides Mizo. Mizo is written in Roman script. The nomadic Chakmas practice a curious mix of Hinduism, Buddhism and Animism.
The Society of the Mizos
The Mizos are impregnable society with no class difference and no discrimination on the grounds of sex. 90% of the total society are into cultivation and the village seems like a big family. Birth of a child, marriage in the village and death of a person in the village or a community feast organised by a member of the village are prime events in which the whole village takes part.
The Art of the Mizos
Although the advent of Christianity brought about a big change, the colourful culture of the Mizos has remained intact. The traditional crafts of Mizoram are weaving, cane and bamboo work. The Mizo women weave intricate traditional designs and patterns on their looms. For example, the shawls carrying tribal clan motifs woven into them and are passed down the generations.
The Food of the Mizos
Mizo food is simple, basically made up of lentils, bamboo shoots and fish; pork, chicken and wild game meat and rice are hot favourites. Maize is widely grown and eaten.
