As the deadline ended on Wednesday, the sources said census officials would seek an extension from the state government to cover them.

Reports from deputy commissioners, designated as Principal Census Officers, of all the eight districts said while a few of them relented, the majority refused to enroll themselves saying they were ready to face any punitive action.

These people declared they had no objection to being enrolled in the census, but refused to be marked with a Unique ID for fear of the Biblical 'Beast' or the Devil, the sources said.

The fear of being identified with the 'number of the beast' stems from the Bible's Revelation chapter 13 Verse 17 which says "...and that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark or the name of the beast or the number of his name."

The Unique Identification Authority of India stipulates that no one can buy or sell property without the UID card among its other key uses.
The first phase of the exercise is scheduled to be completed in less than a week by May 26.

But there is a catch, the entire exercise hinges on the support of Mizoram, which has been asked to extend government services and transport facilities.

The Brus have been displaced from Mizoram in November 2009. In the first phase, a total of 210 Bru families have been identified for repatriation from Tripura to Mizoram. The repatriation that was earlier scheduled to start from May 11 was aborted, as the Mizoram Government failed toprovide transportation facilities.

Asian Centre for Human Rights (ACHR), said that the repatriation is taking place after written assurances were given by the Ministry of Home Affairs about rehabilitation and security of the returnee Brus. The Bru Coordination Committee submitted its demands for rehabilitation of the newly arrived Brus through the ACHR.

Earlier, Ministry of Home Affairs sanctioned grants-in-aid of Rs 2.43 crore to Mizoram for meeting expenditure on repatriation and rehabilitation of Bru families, who had fled to Tripura in November, 2009.

“The first phase of repatriation should build necessary confidence to start the stalled dialogue for resolving the disputes surrounding the Brus who fled in 1997. The Asian Centre for Human Rights encourages both Mizoram and the Bru Coordination Committee to avail the opportunity arising out of this first phase of repatriation process to find a permanent solution to the Bru crisis,” said director of Asian Centre for Human Rights, Suhas Chakma.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7048193096133712033.post-56977245059589644532010-03-19T06:16:00.001-07:002010-03-19T06:16:48.952-07:00Vacancy at Department of Biotechnology, Mizoram University
On Saturday, the Baptist Church of Mizoram (BCM) said it would take ''strong punitive action'', including excommunication, against homosexuals in the flock.

The highest assembly of the BCM, the second most powerful Church body in Mizoram after the Presbyterian Church, has effectively ruled that homosexuality should be outlawed, Church leaders said here. Over 900 Baptist Church leaders attended the meeting held at BCM Bazaar Church at Lawngtlai in south Mizoram, about 300 km from Aizwal.

The meeting was chaired by Rev. C Rothuama.

According to the BCM guidelines, same-sex relationships, abortions and birth control are strictly prohibited in Mizoram. The BCM, however, is not against medical termination of pregnancy when the life of a woman is in danger.

The controversy surrounding the Church and homosexuality had begun in Mizoram in July last year after Delhi high court struck down Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code which criminalized consensual gay sex among adults.

The court had then observed that the section violated fundamental rights of life and liberty and the right to equality as enshrined in the Constitution.

Immediately after the order, Mizo Church leaders came out in opposition. An umbrella Church organization of the state, the Mizoram Kohhran Hruaitute Committee (MKHC), appealed to Union law and justice to look uphold Section 377.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7048193096133712033.post-35941438149319362602010-01-31T05:10:00.000-08:002010-01-31T05:10:10.095-08:00National integration camp begins in AyodhyaAyodhya, Jan 31 A week-long national integration camp began here today with active participation of the youth from different parts of the country.

Special Correspondent
SILCHAR, Nov 18: With the rerun of ethnic violence in Mizoram following the killing of a Mizo youth identified as Zarzo Kima (18) by the nascent and obscure Bru Revolutionary Army (BRA) at Bungthuam village in Mamit district on last Friday, the Bru crisis has further deepened. In retaliation to the killing, the Mizos attacked and torched around 400 Reang houses spread across Mamit and Kolasib districts of Mizoram. The worst affected villages are Lakhicherra, Kwartha, Kawnpui, Kalaliang, Dampariang, Khinlung and other areas.

According to Mizoram Bru Displaced Peoples’ Forum (MBDPF) president Elvis Chorkhy, more than 5,000 panic-striken Brus have deserted their homes and sought shelter in the refugee camps of Kanchanpur in north Tripura and in Reang-dominated villages of Riflemara, Gutguti and Cheragi in the southern fringe of Assam in Hailakandi district.

The fresh exodus has further deepened the 12-year-long Bru crisis. It will be recalled that in the wake of violent disturbances in October 1997 in Mizoram, 35,000 Brus fled to Tripura and were accommodated in six relief camps at Dashda, Naisingpara, Khakchang, Ananda Bazar, Monpai and Rongapara. Since then, these tribesmen have been languishing in the camps and there has been no sincere efforts from the Union Home Ministry and the Mizoram Government to give them shelter. In order to create a conducive atmosphere for amicable settlement, the armed outfits fighting for the cause of Brus — Bru National Liberation Front (BNLF) and Bru Liberation Front of Mizoram (BLFM) – laid down arms in 2005 and 2006 respectively.
The memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the Mizoram Government and the BNLF clearly stipulated that the refugees sheltered in relief camps would be taken back to their native villages in phases, and for their socio-economic development, a special development council would become functional. This apart, relief packages for their rehabilitation and employment with substantial central assistance would also be given effect to, the MoU stated.

The Central Government did come out with the funds of Rs 28 crore for their rehabilitation and Rs 37 crore for the special development council. But for reasons best known to the Centre and the Mizoram Government, not even a single clause of the peace accord till date has been implemented, rued Bruno Msha, an important functionary of MBDPF.

According to sources, disappointment and frustration has been pushing the surrendered BNLF and BLFM militants to opt for jungle life again, and they might be behind the floating of BRA.
Also, nothing concrete came out at the last tripartite meeting held in Aizawl on November 4 involving the representatives of the Centre, Mizoram Government and MBDPF on the question of repatriation of the 35,000 refugees.

Elvis Chorkhy said, “Brus will not return to their villages unless all our demands are met.”
The Coordination Committee of Mizoram NGOs comprising Young Mizo Association (YMA), Mizo Zirlawi Pawl (MZP), Mizo Hmeichhe Insuihkhawm Pawl (MNIP) and Mizoram Upa Pawl (MUP), on the other hand, took a tough stand on repatriation and said, “Refugees should not be taken back unless and until Brus shun violence.” Given the situation, the ethnic divide has once again caused concern among the peace-loving people of Mizoram.
Official sources in Agartala and Silchar said the number of Reang refugees who had entered Tripura and Assam over the past two days had now crossed the 5,000 mark. There were also signs of communal tension in the Mizo-dominated Jampui and Sakhantang hills of North Tripura, forcing the authorities to tighten security around all 10 Mizo-dominated villages.

The 35,000 Reang refugees stranded in the six camps close to Jampui hills in Kanchanpur subdivision organised rallies near their camps in Dashda, Naisingpara, Khakchang, Ananda Bazar, Monpui and Shashadhar Roajapara, condemning the “organised attacks” on their tribesmen in Lokicherra, Kwartha, Kawnpui and other areas of Mamit district.

In a rally this morning at Ananda Bazar, Elvis Chorkhy, president of the Mizoram Displaced Bru People’s Forum, charged the Lalthanhawla government with “aiding and abetting” the anti-Reang rioters to prevent the repatriation of refugees stranded in the six camps of North Tripura since October 15, 1997. They burnt an effigy of state home minister R. Lalzirliana to condemn his alleged role in the attacks.

The superintendent of police (North), Dipak Kumar, who is camping in Jampui hills, said security had been tightened in all Mizo-dominated villages. He said shortly after the killing of Zarjo Kima, an 18-year-old Mizo, in Bungthuam village on Friday, leaders of the Young Mizo Association (YMA) and Young Bru Association had held a meeting and decided to work together to maintain peace.

The YMA also distributed relief materials among the Reangs who have entered villages bordering Kanchanpur subdivision over the past couple of days.

“No untoward incident has occurred as the Reangs and Mizos have been living side by side in Jampui for more than a century. The trouble is likely to be caused by new entrants,” Kumar said.

The district magistrate (North), Samarjit Bhowmik, who visited the villages affected by influx this morning, said more than 5,000 Reangs had trickled into Vellian Chip, Monpui, Damcherra, Saboal, Ananda Bazar and Khakchang village. In Assam, 132 Reangs crossed the inter-state border and took shelter in Cheragi village under Karimganj district.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7048193096133712033.post-78172070522081816472009-11-16T23:15:00.001-08:002009-11-16T23:15:36.840-08:00Houses burnt in Mizoram, Brus flee to TripuraAt least 1,500 Bru or Reang tribals fled to Tripura after agitated Mizo tribals set fire to their houses in Mamit district in Mizoram on Sunday following the killing of a villager.

Official in Aizawl said trouble broke out after miscreants, suspected to be members of a Bru militant group, shot Zarzokima, a 17-year old youth from Bungthuam village, when he had gone to a nearby forest to collect firewood on Friday. “A note left behind by the miscreants near the body mentioned they belonged to Bru Revolutionary Union (BRU). The note said BRU would not rest till their demands were met,” Mizoram DGP Lalrokhuma Pachuau told The Indian Express.

After the bullet-ridden body of the youth was found, villagers retaliated by attacking houses of Bru tribals in nearby areas.

“At least 350 houses have been burnt down in 10 villages since Saturday,” the DGP said.

Unofficial sources in Tripura claimed over 4,000 Bru or Reangs have fled from Mizoram and taken shelter in the Jampui Hills in the past two days.

The DGP, however, disagreed with these estimates. “The number will not be more than 1,500,” Pachuau said.

The Mizoram government has issued a strongly worded denial which said the Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla was not correctly appreciated. What he had stated was that India is a multi-racial country and there could occasionally be some misunderstanding based on physical features of individuals from particular regions of the country. He did not even distantly suggest or hint that the people of India were racist and that he was a victim of racism, the Mizoram government said.

Earlier the CM of Mizoram Lal Thanhawla, was qouted at a conference as passing racial remarks at India. The CM said, "In India, people ask me if I am an Indian. When I go South, people ask me such questions. They ask me if I am from Nepal or elsewhere. They forget that the Northeast is part of India. I have told many that see, I am an Indian like you. I am a victim of racism," said Lal Thanhawla. But his remarks hadn't gone down well with his Congress party. In fact the Congress has reacted strongly, saying it wants an explanation from the Chief Minister for his allegation that he's faced racism within India.

Others present at the conference and who had heard the Mizoram chief minister speak said Lalthanhawla did not refer to racism at all, but took a light-hearted look at the distance between the northeast and the rest of India.

"The people have given the verdict to kill him (chief minister). Someone needs to execute it, so we took charge of it," Maoist leader Bikash told reporters.
Lalgarh has been on the boil since last November when a landmine exploded on the route of the convoy of Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and then central ministers Ram Vilas Paswan and Jitin Prasada near Bhadutala when they were returning after laying the foundation stone of a steel plant in Salboni.
Police arrested some school students and allegedly harassed tribal women following the landmine blast. In protest, angry tribals dug up roads, virtually cutting off the zone from the rest of the district. They also demanded a public apology from the police for the alleged excesses against them. Lalgarh is some 200 km from here.
The area has witnessed continuous clashes between cadre of the ruling Left and the Maoists.
On Monday the tribals, led by the People's Committee Against Police Atrocities (PCAPA), allegedly set fire to the house of Anuj Pandey - a top Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader in Lalgarh - and also forced the police to wind up three camps set up in the area.
"At least 2,000 CPI-M men have fled Lalgarh. All their top leaders have also left the place. They have been sheltered in camps at Bandhgora in nearby Jhargram," a district police official said Monday.
Asked about the situation in Lalgarh, West Midnapore district magistrate N.S. Nigam said it was very tense. "There is no improvement in the situation yet," Nigam told IANS.
On Tuesday in Itaberia in East Midnapore, police seized some arms and ammunition from a CPI-M office.
"We have got two fire arms, 10 bullets, 17 bombs and some other material from the CPI-M party office," Pallab Kanti Ghosh, East Midnapore superintendent of police, told IANS.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7048193096133712033.post-57163613210817544232009-02-18T03:09:00.000-08:002009-02-18T03:09:23.138-08:00The North East accroding to a ForiegnerIt is a different place here in the North East—North East India. People don’t stare. More people speak English—even the fisherman who sells his fish in the market speaks English.

People wear “whatever” or “western-clothes.” It’s not a big deal for a young woman to wear a short skirt. Every other person is a Christian.

We are not far from China, Burma, Bhutan, Nepal and Bangladesh. The local people are tribal people. Shillong is the native place of the Khasi people.

They tend to be small stocky people, with good smiles who are very talented musicians. They love hot chillis. They have a weakness for alcohol and they are a Matriarchal people.

Though I find it very intriguing that they value the daughters so highly in this culture, it is sad to see the affect on their brothers.

Patriarchy also has a similarly damaging affect on women but we are so used to these affects they seem normal to us.

I am waiting for the new order when women and men will be seen as equally precious as bearers of God’s image. Here the women study…earning degree.

Then perhaps they become lecturers at a local college, the men stay home and at best do the cooking, cleaning, and raising the kids.

At the worst, they drink all day and spend their wives earnings.
The state of Mizoram in India is close to both the Indo-Bangladesh border and the Indo-Myanmar border. The closeness to the numerous international borders has made Mizoram a blend of various tribes that migrated from China, Myanmar (the erstwhile Burma), and the other parts of the Northeast. Some Mizo tribes may have formed a part of the people who lived in the Tao valley in northwest China. They slowly proceeded towards the border of Tibet and Myanmar and around 1700 AD, these tribes shifted to what is known as Mizoram today.

The Influence of Christianity in Mizoram
The social and cultural life in the Mizo society has undergone enormous changes over the years. The Mizo people belong to a Mongoloid race associated to the Shaans of Myammar (Burma). The Lushai, Hmars, Paithes, Raltes, Pang, Mara, Lakher, Kukis and Pawis of Mizoram are the tribes who were originnally the believers of the Pathan (good spirit). With the immigration of the British and consequently the settling of the Christian missionaries in the region, most people got converted to Christianity. Thus, due to the influence of the British in this region, most of the population speak in English besides Mizo. Mizo is written in Roman script. The nomadic Chakmas practice a curious mix of Hinduism, Buddhism and Animism.

The Society of the Mizos
The Mizos are impregnable society with no class difference and no discrimination on the grounds of sex. 90% of the total society are into cultivation and the village seems like a big family. Birth of a child, marriage in the village and death of a person in the village or a community feast organised by a member of the village are prime events in which the whole village takes part.

The Art of the Mizos
Although the advent of Christianity brought about a big change, the colourful culture of the Mizos has remained intact. The traditional crafts of Mizoram are weaving, cane and bamboo work. The Mizo women weave intricate traditional designs and patterns on their looms. For example, the shawls carrying tribal clan motifs woven into them and are passed down the generations.

The Food of the Mizos
Mizo food is simple, basically made up of lentils, bamboo shoots and fish; pork, chicken and wild game meat and rice are hot favourites. Maize is widely grown and eaten.
They bought 1,500 acres in Nalgonda district
alone. Investigations now reveal that the Maytas Hill County Developers (MHCD) bought the land at Rachakonda near Malkapuram village in Nalgonda district, which is located 40 kms from Hyderabad.

This new revelation comes as a surprise. Initially, it was believed that the Maytas groups and Satyam former chairman Ramalinga Raju purchased land mainly in the neighbouring Ranga Reddy district, his native West Godavari district and Visakhapatnam district.

There have been reports that high profile land broker Akula Rajaiah bought hundreds of acres land through general power of attorney (GPA) in Rachakonda area from gullible tribals and sold it to Ramalinga Raju and his family members.

The MHCD represented by its director D V S Subba Raju, also made land transactions in the same area in February and March last year, investigations by the stamps and registration departments have revealed. A total of 11 transactions involving purchase of 1500 acres from farmers by Maytas were recorded in the Choutuppal sub registrar office.

According to officials of the registration and stamps department, through one transaction, the firm bought 784 acres in Malkapuram village for a total government value of Rs 98 lakh. Similarly in February 2008, the firm purchased 491 acres for Rs 14.34 crore in survey no. 167 of the same village limits.

In other transactions, MHCD bought 187 acres for Rs 2.33 crore in survey no. 248 and 108 acres for Rs 1.8 crore. There were transactions for 87 acres, 46 acres, 52 acres and 17 acres in the village.

Interestingly, Maytas has two transactions pertaining to land development in Pulivendula of Kadapa district as well. The Pulivendula assembly constituency is being represented by chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy.

In one transaction, Maytas made a lease deed for development of six acres land. The lease agreement was made between Tera Ramachandra Reddy and Maytas NCC Joint venture. In the same village another agreement was made by the same parties for another piece of land.

In Banjara Hills, Maytas Housing Pvt Ltd entered into an agreement for developing one lakh square feet built-up area on Road No 2.

The registration and stamps department found several land dealings in the name of the Byrraju Satyanarayana Raju Charitable Trust. The transactions were found in Bhatna village in West Godavari district, Vedireshwaram near Ravulapalem, Chinakondepudi of Seethanagaram mandal of Guntur district and Rushikonda area of Visakhapatnam city.

Officials said Ramalinga Raju's relatives live in the areas where the land has been purchased in the name of charitable trust.

Ramalinga Raju's wife Nandini Raju and mother Appala Narsamma made 260 transactions in Jeedimetla village of Medchal for selling flats in Sundaram apartment and Rama Raju Nagar.

Nandini Raju made transactions of Satyam Enclave in Pet Basheerabad of Ranga Reddy district. One M Nagaraju represented Nandini Raju for all these transactions.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7048193096133712033.post-41933655634034769762009-01-24T22:14:00.000-08:002009-01-24T22:15:41.887-08:00Mahni hming bula reverend dah hi
